CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. Palmerston North, Sept. 10. In preliminary amateur versus professional matches at the New Zealand championship golf tourney on Saturday the four-ball was won by the professionals by three to two. Results, amateurs being mentioned first: — Sime and Morpeth lost to Clements and Moss, 1 up. Duncan and Lusk lost to Brooks and Ham, 4 and 3. Horton and Bidwill beat Shaw and Butters, 1 up. Wight and Bell lost to Blair and McCormick, 1 and 1. Cross and Eckstedt beat Watt and Forrest, 1 up. GAMES IN AMERICA. New York, Sept. 9. At Brqoklin. Jess Swetser defeated Jones, eight up and seven to play; Evans defeated Knepper, eleven up and nine to play. Swetser won the amateur golf championship, defeating Evans, three and v \ n over holes.—(A. and N.Z.) TAKAPAU CLUB.

The Takapau tournament was continued on Friday and again was favoured with splendid weather. The championship fell to S. Ropata (Takapau) after meeting N. R. Jacobsen (Napier) and W. J. White (Hastings). The prizes and trophies were presented by Mrs Sydney Johnston and Sir George Hunter, and as it happened were fairly evenly distributed amongst the club’s represented. The following are the re< suits of the day’s play. Second Round Championship. Ropata (Takapau) beat Jacobsen (Napier.) W. J. White (Hastings) beat Blundel (Waipawa). Final. Ropata beat White. Four-ball Match. — Armstrong and Hur*gill 7 up, Camerson and G. Waite 6 up, Riddell and Ashworth 3 up, E. R. White and Johnston 3 up, McDonnell and Stubbs 2 up, Ormond and Jacobsen 2 up, Mackie and. Hooper 2 up, Reid and Rickey 2 up, Bishop and Haldane 2 up, Witherow and Williams 2 up, Clark and Roberts 1 up, Hobson and Craig 1 up, Caughley and Scott all square, Riddiford and Callender, all square, Power and Bcechan 2 down, Anstiee and Smith 3 down, Blundell and Tansey all square.
