SMALL DICTIONARY STO. GESTED.
‘‘ I agree with the honourable member that it is highly desirable to have steps taken to preserve the correct pronunciation and charm of the Maori place names in New Zealand. Inquiries will be made as to the possibility, and cost of compiling a small dictionary as suggested. In this dictionary there might also bo included an account of the meaning or origin of the word and, in special cases, of any historical fact connected therewith. After inquiry has been made, I shall be glad to notify the honourable gentleman what steps, if any, can be taken in tho direction referred to.” The above was the reply given by the Minister for Education (the Hon. C. J. I'arr) to a question asked by Afr A. 8. Malcolm (Clutha).
