COMMONWEALTH NOTES.
Mr. William Pearce, the newlyelected Labour member for the Frankly constituency (Tasmania) died as a result of heart failure. The election writs are not returnable till 29th, after which deceased 15 s preferences will be distributed in the same manner as if he were a discarded candidate.
At a meeting of the Federal Cabinet Mr. Hughes hinted that a reduction in ' taxation is likely and a lioard of directors to manage the Commonwealth line of shipping will he appointed. It was also suggested that proposals for a constitutional referendum would be held at the next elections. Mr. J. N. Mason, Crown Prosecutor at the Wagga quarter sessions, collapsed during a case and died a few minutes later. The N.S.W. State Cabinet discussed the proposal to send an orchestra with the Empire Exhibition, but decided to take no action.
