H.B.J.C. *s SUMMER MEETING, CONCLUDING RESULTS. Tho concluding day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held under very favourable conditions, considering the elements on the first day. The day was nice and sunny, not too warm, which, allowed the feminine sex to attend in large numbers and their pretty dresses among the crowd on the lawn formed a bright and gay spectacle. The course was in good order, and some interesting racing eventuated. The surprise of the day was Sir George Hunter’s Crown Gem’s win in the last race, in which he defeated the hot favourite in a brilliant run, by a nose. Irr the New Year Handicap Gazique fell in the straight, and the jockey, J. Nixon, sustained a broken collarbone. An inquiry was held by the Stewards, and they considered that the fall was caused by an error .of judgment on the

part of the jockey in trying to get through. As the result of bumping and interference in the last race on tho first day, J. D. Dywer, the rider of Prince Randall, was suspended for three months. The totalisator put through £23,567, -as against £33,268 for the second day of tho 1920 summer meeting, a decrease of £9701, and for the meeting a sum of £43,512 was handled as compared with £67,820 last year, a decrease of £24,308. The Hastings Band were again in attendance and discoursed an enjoyable programme of music. Concluding results:—

OMAHU HANDICAP, 150 sovs; 1 mile. Mr 11. Hunt’s Convention, Provocation—Te Kohai (L. Berry), 8.6 1 Mr H. M. Campbell’s Gamboola (R. Orange), 8.9 2 Mr J. G. Sutherland’s Mystico (G. Deslandes), 7.5 3

Also started: Morzonia, Minsk, Black Tea, Queen’s Ferry ,Marcus and Antler. Gamboola and Queen’s Ferry were the first away. Morzonia was the last to start. A great race in the straight ensued and Convention gained the verdict by a nose, three lengths separating second and third horses. Time, 1.42 4-5.

MATAPIRO FLYING HANDICAP, 200 sovs; 61 furlongs. Mr F. Hall’s Prince Jewel. Fort Wil-liam-Tauhei (H. Griffiths), 9.9 . . 1 Douglas’ Estate, Warpath (R. Hunt), 8.0 2 Mr F. Ormond’s Slave Mart (H.* Dunn), 7.5 3 Also started: Tout Bon, Land Bird, Megan. Slave Mart and Megan were the most prominent from, a good send-off. Prince Jewel, who had been lying handy, made the running entering the straight, and beat Warpath by threequarters of a length, one and threequarters length separating second and third. Tout Bon was left at the post. Timo, 1.22. FINAL HANDICAP, 300 sovs, six furlongs. Sir G. Hunter’s Crown Gem.. Crown Imperial—Mungista (H. Dunn), 6.7 1 Mr C. Norgrove’s Prince Randall (L. Berry), 8.4 2 Air A. Russell’s Bunny (G. Deslandes), 7.0 3 Also started: Tari, Caricature and Civil Form. Civil Form and Caricature showed the running, then Cariacture took first place. A great tussle in the straight saw Crown Gem make a brilliant run to beat Prince, Randall by a neck. Bunny was three lengths away third. Time, 1.15.

NOTES. (By “Trenton.”) The Clerk of the Weather was in a much better mood for the second day’s racing of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, and the consequence was that the attendance was considerably larger than on the previous day. Speculation on the totalisator also showed a decided improvement, but once again the receipts fell far short of those recorded on the corresponding day last year, making the total deficit lor the meeting about £23,000. The sport provided was even better than on the first day but on the whole the public did not experience such a good innings, very few favourites scoring wins. FIRST EVENT. Athens 11. was the only defection from the Aotea Jumpers’ Flat, for which the popular choice was Lady Muriel, with Wamba and Ore Ore next in demand in that order. The public, however, were wrong in their estimation, for Wamba once again asserted his superiority by winning by half a length from Lady Muriel, the much boomed Ore Ore being several lengths away third. The latter has ran very disappointedly at the meeting, after his creditable showing at other meetings. The winner paid a good price. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. Heather King was made a hot favourite for the Klectric Handicap, nearly £lOOO being invested on him. Bodyguard was the next choice, and then lollowed Mountain Peer, Kail and Lady Thuriiham, and Suspicion, the rest being poorly supported. When the critical stage arrived, Bodyguard shovyed that he appreciated the better going by landing the stake by a length from Suspicion, who was a similar distance in front of the favourite. The winner returned a good dividend. ANOTHER HOT ONE GOES UNDER. Gazique and Civilform were withdrawn rrom the January Handicap, lor winch Asterma Mas heavily backed, the investments on him reaching over four figures. Queen’s Up, Haurangi, Valley Bose, and Woden were also well backed. The winner turned up in Valley Rose, by Self er ino- Anita, who paid a good price to ins supporters. Pente was secuiid, and justified the confidence reposed in her by rewarding her backers with one of the best dividends of the meeting. The favourite was never in the hunt. FAVOURITE SCORES. The whole of the acceptors in the Nursery Handicap faced the starter, Morose going out with a support oi over four figures. Morose again plainly demonstrated that her victory on Monday was no fluke, for she easily disposed of Viyella at the finish. THE BIG EVENT.

A field of eight went out for the New Year Handicap, of 350 sovs, Hepta having been scratched. Gazique carried most money, but Sycorax, Urawia, and The Speaker were also substantially supported. Unfortunately the race* wat robbed of a good deal of interest owing to Gazique falling when appearing to have an excellent chance, and Sycorax and The Speaker were then left to fight out the issue, when the former gained the verdict by two lengths, with Bagdad a similar distance a wav. The winner is by King Mark-Witchet and at the Manawatu meeting suddenly developed winning form, so that his win at Hastings yesterday was confidently anticipated by a largo number.

CONVENTION WINS. Morzonia and Convention divided tho favouritism in tho Oniahu Handicap, in which the only defection was Heather King. Then followed Gamboola, Black Tea and Minsk in that order. When the right moment came Convention reproduced his good showing tho previous day by winning easily from Gamboola, with tho outsider Mystico in third place. GISBORNE HORSE SCORES. Bodyguard was the only withdrawal from the Matapiro Flying, leaving a field of six starters, Prince Jewel was entrusted with a heavy percentage ot the totalisator investments, and showed his appreciation of the regard of the public for him by comfortably winning from another solidly-supported one in Warpath, who in turn defeated a third favourite in Slave Mart. This was Prince Jewel's second win at the meeting. He is owned by Mr. F. Hall, and is a highly-bred one, being by Fort William out of Tauhei, both of whom made names for themselves when in the racing arena. A SURPRISE.

The concluding race—the Final Handicap—resulted in a surprise. Asterina and Hepta were the scratched horses, and Prince Randall, another horse hailing from Poverty Bay, was the popular pick, with Tari, Civilform, Caricature and Bunny also well backed, Crown Gem being the outsider. In the straight, when the favourite looked all over a winner. Crown Gem came through and easily disposed of Prince Randall and Bunny and paid the best dividend of the meeting. Crown Gem is owned by Sir George Hunter, M.P. and is by Crown Imperial Mungista. She has previously shown that she has a partiality to a sprint course. WINNING PAYMENTS. L Following are the winning payments in connection with the meeting :—C. Morse £350; C. E. Twist £2BO, C. L. Ferguson £280; F. Hall £2BO, C. H. Cato £245; Sir George Hunter, M.P., £210; C. Kirkpatrick £210; T. McKenzie £140; J. Dealey £125; R. H. Aislabie £120; C. Norgrove £l2O, Douglas Estate £llO, F. Armstrong £llO, G. L. Lane £lO5, H. Hunt £lO5, C. J. Bennett £BO, E. R. Murphy £6O, M. Thomas £6O, H. M. Campbell, M.P., £5O, C. Haldane £6O, E. G. Rathbone £3O, A. Russell £3O, Byrne and Gleeson £4O, Mrs H. M. Campbell £35, J. Mackay £3O, J. H. White £45, J. G. Sutherland £l5, J. M. Brown £15 x F. Ormond £l5, C. W. Merrylees £l5, G. D. Beatson £l5. SUCCESSFUL JOCKEYS. R. Hunt headed the list of winning jockeys with four wins to his credit. B. Berry came next with three wins, and then followed J. Nixon, H. Dunn and H. Griffiths with two wins each. The following had one win each: G. Deslandes, J. W. Dwyer and F. Waddell.

SUCCESSFUL TRAINERS. The following are the names of the trainers whose charges were successful: C. Norgrove, three wins; A. White, C. Morse, and G. Sceats, two each; J. Oldfield, D. Kemp, S Waddell, W. Griffiths, V. H. Couelo, H. Hunt and R. Gooseman, one each. Small and all as was the general run of dividends yesterday, a modest punter who got a hunch to follow the Gooseman stable “played up” a £ that way and brought home just £55 6s 6d—less the cost of a few of the w®ll “reduced” shilling whiskies that were going. It was his good luck that each of “Old Bob’s” three starters got into the money, two of them paying the best returns of the day, one for a win and the other for second. Mr. A. Symes .has had the bad luck to lose Ben Bolt, which had won him i fair number of races on the flat and had made a promising beginning • s a hurdler. The horse broke a leg while being schooled at Ellerslie last week, and had to be destroyed.

Another racecourse idol seems to have been shattered when Epitaph failed even to got a place among five starters in the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. As yet the wires have furnished no explanation of this bad defeat of the two-year-old champion. AUCKLAND’S CONCLUDING DAY. EPITAPH DEFEATED. Auckland, Jan. 3.
