(By "Trenton.’’) I am pleased to learn that Lionel Berry, who had his collarbone broken at the Marton -Meeting owing to Nicomar coming to grief, has so far recovered as to enable him to resume his occupation. The Speaker, winner of the Spring Handicap at the Hastings meeting, is among those horses still engaged in the New Zealand Cup. Oupidon started at a double-figure price when ho won the A.J.C.. Derby. Royal Star, a New Zealand Cup candidate, is doing good work on the Riccarton training tracks, • * * » Jock and Penitent have each incurred a 51b. penalty for the New Zealand Cup. The poet. sang. "The Hawk unto the open sky. the red deer to the wold,’’ etc., and what could bo more appropriate than The Hawk for the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. It is a good idea that came too late for practical application. —"Sentinel" in "Otago Daily Tinies."

The same writer, under the caption of “Tho Hawk on the Wing," says:— “When the northerners were lamenting what, to them, seemed to be the fact'that The Hawk had not trained on since lasi- season, the writer endeavoured to give heart to admirers of tlie Cup candidate by stating that if th© son of Martian and Sparrowhawk was being seriously, and by that is meant competently, trained for the New Zealand Cup, it need not astonish anyone if ho got beat for brilliancy in his early spring engagements. There was» possibly, a further reason for The Hawk’s defeats. He may have been simply lacking in racing condition. The Hawk made his first appearance this season as a young three-year-old in the Railway Handicap run and won at tho end of six furlongs in 1.13 4-5. The Hawk was fourth. He next appeared in the Wanganui Guineas, in which he had to be content to third place behind Tamatete and Thespian. The Hawk was in receipt of the 51b gelding allowance (some clubs continue to flout the readjusted w.f.a. scale as far as unsexed horses are concerned), from Thespian, and if the form was correct it was not surprising chat the latter gave 41b and a beating on tho second day of the same meeting.** Rational had in the meantime been winning over short courses. A win came for him at Taranaki and again at the Pakuranga Hunt, where Rational gave Grotesque 13ib and nearly a twolengths’ beating over six furlongs. The superiority of speed seems unquestionable, At Avondale, Rational gave 21b and a length and a-half beating to Grotesque, whilst Mermin, in receipt of 141 b from the winner, was unplaced. Then Grotesque comes out, and those who follow their fancy with money made himj third favourite to Rational and Mermin, hut Grotesque appears to have completely outstayed tliem, and was apparently the best three-year-old of the trio over this distance. In the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Grotesque had apparently an absolutely hopeless chance of giving The Hawk 71b, and tho form over the distance now reads Tamatete, Thespian. The Hawk, Grotesque. Rational, and Mermin, Possibly Mermin is not yet right, hut so far it is clear that Rational retains his remarkable turn of speed. The Hawk lost his by being trained for a journey*. Grotesque has made a remarkable improvement since last year, although he was an attractive hut too lusty looking two-year-old in the spring, and now it remains for Tamatete. Thespian, and The Hawk to meet again. They may meet in the Champion Plate, to be decided at Trentham this month, but there are other Richmonds in the field in the shape of the A.J.C. Derby winner. Cupidon, Amythas, Sasanof, to say nothing of other good performers, which should make it one of the mostinteresting races ever decided in New Zealand."

"Sentinel" may be correct in his surmise of The Hawk’s form, but there is no getting away from the fact .that previous to the Marton and Wanganui meetings Tho Hawk had performed brilliantly on the tracks, so much so 'that jrreat things were expected of him when lie camo to race. It must also be remembered that such horses as Manton. Seahorse, and St. Hippo wore successful over the Guineas course prior to their winning the Now Zealand Cup. Then, again, some of the best horses in Australia and Now Zealand have boon successful over all distances.

After Calma had scored a. very easy win in the Waitangi Steeples th© spectators were invited to witness the presentation of the silver cup which went with the stakes (says "Sentinel"). The well-known trainer. P. T. Hogan, declined to face the music, and the trophy was received on his behalf by Mr. J. P. Murphv, one of the patrons of the stable. It is probably one of the few occasions in history where an Irishman has refused to make a speech or shy at a cup of anything. T-n+. fniirli +li« liarn n’nntlv •—

net us toucn tne narp gently: — Oh. Patrick, dear, and did you hear The news that’s going round. That you declined to take a cup Worth fully twenty pound ? Are you afraid of cups, m’ bhoy? Is a question one may ask: Or a racing son of Oliver Twist, Who prefers it by tlie cask? Tho small racing clubs in New Zealand, in • comparison to metropolitan and semi-metropolitan clubs, are apparently very far below the salt in the big sporting banquet annually and continuously supplied for the racing gourmands of the Dominion (says "Sentinel"). At least one would gather that opinion from the remarks of Mr. J. B. Harcourt, president of the Wellington Racing Club, when delivering his annual address to the members. Mr. Harcourt rebukeci the newspapers of the Dominion for giving so much publicity to reports of minor meetings, and so (ho claimed) glorified them into matters of vital importance. And so they arc to those who take more than a superficial interest m racing and breeding. Mr. Harcourt seems to forget that racing, or, rather, racing form, in this or any other country, is made itp by an endless chain, in which even Iho smallest links are matters of vital impnrtance in tho racing world. It has always been th’e boast of the country clubs that they ar© feeders of the metropolitan clubs, both with men, money, and horses; and to a. certain extent that is true. It is related that a mouse once helped a lion and that a spider "bucked up" King Bruce.
