WORLD’S LARGEST SAILER.
FRANCE AT WELLINGTON. HUGE FIVE-MASTED BARQUE. The world’s largest sailing vessel, j the five-masted French barque France,; 5633 tons, arrived in the stream at I Wellington on Tuesdav night from Lyttelton to complete her loading for London. The France arived at Lyttel-. ton on June 25 from Newport, Wales, with a full cargo of coal for the Rail- * wav Department. The France is a magnificent looking vessel, presenting a rare spectacle at sea- with her vast expanse of canvas and elegant lines. She is nearly double the tonnage of the Scales Company’s tour-masted barque Rewa (the largest British sailing vessel afloat), which happens to be lying at the Railway wharf in port at Wellington. The France’s five masts measure about 200 ft. from the deck to the trunk. The vessel is equipped with wireless telegraphic apparatus, a powerful steam-steering engine, and a 1 large steam donkey-boiler for Rupplvand windlasses. She is electrically generators, cargo winches, capstans, and windltsses. She is electrically lighted throughout. Captain A. Lcport has a crew of 56.
