Oct. 22, 24.—Wellington R.C. LEMONORA SCRATCHED. London, Aug. 15. Lemonora will not run in the St. Lcger.—(A. and N.Z.) NOTES. (By “Trenton.”) The Sydenham Hurdle Race, of 600 sovs., 2 miles, run on the concluding day of the C.J.C. meeting, resulted in a great surprise, being won by Explorer, by Kenilworth—Tilga. who started a rank outsider, and who easily accounted for Multive, who also paid a. nice price for serjpnd place. The two favourites. Gladful and Mill o’ Gowrie, were the last to finish. Crosswords fell. In the Lincoln Steeplechase the Wai-rarapa-owned horse Sturdeo showed something like the form ho displayed at Hastings and Napier Park. He disposed of Manawaponga at the kennels double, and. jumping beautifully, he was not afterwards troubled, and eventually won by ten lengths from First Iline. A Wellington writer saws thai Sturdee is not thoroughly seasoned yet. and next year, all going well in tha interval, he should be a National proposition. Scorned last year as being only the little brother of a truly great horse—as a false alarm, a bitter disappointment, and “not worth a nickel’’— and thi&vear having 100,000 dollars offered for him, is the story of a romance of the Turf that concerns a thoroughbred and the unwavering faith his owner and trainer had in him. Playfellow, full brother to that wonder horse, perhaps the greatest that ever raced. Man o’ War, is to-day the most-talked-of horse in the United States. Playfellow, a vear younger than Man o’ War, cost 1800 dollars as a yearling. Recently J. F. Johnson, of the Quincy stable, in whose colours Playfellow runs, refused 100,000 dollars for the horse at Belmont Park, and remarked : “That’s the third offer of the same kind I have refused within four days.” Gazomp. who won the Australian Steeplechase, of 2000 sovs., 4 miles, carrying 9.3, is by Gunner out of Guess. Prior to the meeting Gazomp showed good form by winning the Moondah Steeplechase. 2 miles 3 furlongs and 80 yards, at the V.A.T.C. Steeplechase meeting. Red Blaze, winner of the Longbeach Hunters’ Hurdles on the concluding day of the C.J.C. meeting, started as the outsider of the field, and he returned his few supporters a good dividend. He is owned by Mr. A, G. Macdonald, president of the Geraldine Racing Club. Writing of Tigerland’s performance in the Aylesbury Steenlechnse. a Southern writer says: “Though loaded with 12.13, Fire Eater was backed down to nearly level money. As usual, he was soon out in front, pulling very hard, and desnite a faulty jump at the stand double, he raced out of the straight well clear of Tigerland. Stumbling bndlv on landing over Cntts’ fence. Fire Eater lost his rider, thereby registering his first serious mistake of his career. Half a mile from homo John Bunny raced past Tigerland, but it was only on sufferance. Clearing the last fence in great style, Tigerland won with a lot in reserve by half a* dozen lengths from John Bunny. This marked Tigerland’s second win at the meeting, and stamps him as a greatly improved horse. The Avondale Racing Chib has socured snlendid nominations for its Spring Meeting. Amon" the entrants are Sasanoff. Mermin. Waiolrn, Gasbag. Lovemntch. Silver Link, Humbug, Rational. and many other good ones. The All-p"ed Stakes, to be run at the Autumn Meeting, has a'leo attracted a large number of aristo-crat.ic-bred ones.
