MELANESIA.

Last year the mission steamer “Southern Cross,” when just beginning to visit the islands of the Melanesian Mission, had to return to Auckland owing to a serious outbreak of influx enza on board, from which there were several deaths. This, with the high price of coal, provisions, etc., has thrown the mission into ro much debt, that unless £5,000 is forthcoming from Now Zealand by September 15th, the “Southern Cross” cannot sail, as arranged next month. This means that the lonely islands will have to go without provisions, medicine and other help. In fact it moans a collapse for the. mission, which is most distressing. One man from Hawke’s Bay lias sent in £2O to the Diocesan office, Napier, with the hope that others will respond at once. St. Augustine’s G.F.S. has donated £5. Church of England people are reminded of the great sacrifice of the missionaries in their lonely lives in the islands of the South Pacific; they must not be allowed to suffer.
