Tho sum of .£860.000 is claimed in respect of'tho Stratford (East London) timber yard fire. This is stated to bo a record claim in the history of fire insurance. Lt is reported that the United States is negotiating separate peace treaties with Germany and Austria-Hungary. The former, differing from the former German treaty, will be based on certain provisions of tho Versailles Treaty, while the Austro-Hungarian treaty will be drawn up more like an agreement of amity and commerce. Mr. Twentynian Wilson, years ago a well-known resident of Stratford, died at Christchurch on Tuesday last, in his eighty-fourth yearMiss N. Scanlan, who has been on tho editorial staff of the “Manawatu Daily Times” for the past five years, has resigned her position in order to ■ i ) 1 at rip abroad, and will leave for California by the Niagara in five weeks’ time.
