A Paris cable states that Sarali Bernhardt is seriously ill. Mr» Ray Humphreys, Hastings, has gone on a visit to her sister Mrs Fred. Tong, Little Bush, Puketitiri. The Rev. Dr. R. Erwin was extended a hearty welcome on his return to the Christchurch Presbytery after hia severe illness. Mr Newton King, who is visiting Christchurch, became suddenly ill on Wednesday evening and had to be conveyed to a private hospital. Sub-Inspector Willis, who has been transferred from the Wellington police headquarters to Dunedin, has taken up his new duties. .The Rev Samuel Warren Skene, vicar of Dalton, Wigan, who has just died, was one of seven brothers, all clergymen and sons of a clergyman. At last week’s meeting of the Hospital Board at Palmerston NoAh, Nurse Donovan was appointed district nurse at Waikanae as from Ist September. Mr W. E. Grant, of Hastings, left this morning for Wellington to witness tho Dwyer-Williams return boxing match, which comes off to-night. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Health and Education), at present in Auckland, is expected back in Wellington about the middle of this week. Mr and Mrs Petherick who have been on a visit to their sou, Mr x etherick, of Hastings, left this morning on their return to their home in Torquay, England. Mr H. J. Ryburn, a recently-appoin-ted Rhodes, scholar, left Christchurch this week, on his way to England, where he will continue his studies at Cambridge. Henry Douglas Pike, aged 72, has died at Feiloing. Te was a ex-com-mercial traveller for many houses, and was well-known all over New Zealand. —(Press Association.) rMr T. At. Wilford, Mrs Wilford and Miss Isabel Wilford are returning to New Zealand on tho which is due to arrive at Wellington on Tuesday (to-morrow) morning. Air W. F. Atarsh, Commissioner of Crown Lands, left Napier this morning for Dannevirke, where he meets the Minister of Agruculture, in connection with the opening of a new dairy factory in that district. Ex Police Superintendent CruiAshank,late of Greymouth, who is now on a holiday visit to England, has been appointed Commissioner of Police nt Samoa, and will take up his duties there shortly after returning to New Zealand. Air Geo. P. Aldridge, secretary together with several other members of tho Napier Boxing Association, left thia morning for Wellington, to witness tho return boxing bout between Hughie Dwyer and Bob Williams, which takes place there to-night. The marriage of Miss Hone Elder, second daughter of Mrs Austin Elder, of Aurora-terrace, and the late Mr. Austin Elder, of the Wairnrapa, to Mr. John W. Downey, of Lattin Point, Bay of Plenty, son of Mr. and Mrs J. Downey, of Opotiki, took place at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, ou Thursday. On Friday last a representative gathering of the commercial and shipping community of Auckland met to make a presentation, in the shape of a cheque of a substantial amount, to Air Charles Ranson, the relieving general manager of the Northern S.S. Coy., who was leaving next day for Brisbane on a visit to liis brother. Weston (”C. de Thierry”), Afr J. P. Whitelaw, and Alias A. D. Bright. The death of Air W. J. G. Hunt, at Wellington last week, recalls the troublesome days when the rival chiefs Tamasec and Alalietoa fought for tho kingship of Hamon. Afr Hunt was known as “Samoa” Hunt. Ho claimed to have been the adopted son of tho late Alalietoa Talavou, who was king of Samoa before the islands were divided by America and Germany. Air Hunt was a strong supporter of Great Britain taking over the proteetorate, and ho lived to see Germany ousted from Samoa. After the German occupation of Samoa, Afr Hunt came to Wellington to rest.
