WAIPUKURAU.
(Own Correspondent.) Tho turning of the first sod in connection with t,ho Waipukurau drainage scheme will take place under official auspices at 11 o’clock on Monday morning, on the site of the line of drainage near the saleyards. The Mayor, members of tho Borough Council, and tho Consulting Engineer wid be present, while the public are also invited to attend the ceremony. Mr. H. Price is the contractor. While the first sod will be turned on Monday morning, the work will not be proceeded with till Tuesday morning, when everything will be in readiness to make a good start. The contractor is adopting tho policy of giving preference of employment to married men first. The Green Club Ball, organised and carried out by the members of the Croquet Club, was held at the Town Hall on Thursday night, and was a most successful function. The hall had been neatly decorated with greenery and flags for the occasion. The music was supplied by Mr. A. King’s orchestra, with extras by local player-, and the M.C.'s were Messrs. T. Hutchinson, Carroll, and T. Gveti. The supper arrangements, on a lavish scale, were supervised by the ladies' committee.
