DISASTER IN N.S.W. WATERS RISE’jN DARKNESS. PEOPLE CAUGHT NAPPING. (Received 25. 10.25 a.m.) Sydney, July 25. I Extensive floods occurred in the North Coast district on Saturday. Lismore. .Murwillumbah, Kenipsey, I and Macksville, wore inundated. Two lives were were lost at Murwil-i lumbah. The damage there is esti-’ mated at £100,600. All communication has boon cut off. preventing further information. The Clarence River burst its banks, rising 22 feet. North and South Grafton are partially flooded, but the waters are generally receding. The Hoods were followed by a cyclonic storm, which did severe dam-’ age to property. Six inches of rain, fell in a few hours. | The rivers rpse with unexpected ra-j pidity. breaking their tanks, and swept into the townships already mentioned. Late at night the main streets were deeply flooded, the water in many shops and residences being feet deep. The people caudit napping made their exit with difficulty in the darkness. Many places were completely surrounded. The inmates were taken out by rescue boats. At Murwillumbah a baby worked from its escaping mother’s arms and was drowned. A man was drowned, through a boat overtruning. Wide areas along the rivers are in-' undated, and widespread damage is feared. Other lives have been lost, but un- • til the waters subside it is impossible' to ascertain the full extent of the damage.—(A. and N.Z.)
