BOWLING.
NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT
\ API ER RINK WIN S FIN Al
The final of the East Coast Centres New Year bowling tournament was played on the Napier Club’s green yesterday afternoon, and proved a splendid contest. The match was witnessed by a large number of bowlers, and there was a fair sprinkling of ladies present. The final was between Critchley (Waipawa) and Bull (Napiei>. The local team went off with a big lead in the first half of the game, and Waipawa’s chances seemed small. However, Critchley’s rink made a splendid recovery, and succeeded on the 16th head in reducing the deficit by two points. At this stage there was great excitement, the spectators applauding every shot. Bull used fine generalship, and ou the 20th head was five up, the score being: Bull 20 and Critchley 15. The 20th h«*J was a tense moment, and when the skips went down to play. Bull was lying one. Critchley’s position was critical, and his only chance was to drive and burn the head. He played a good shot, but the bowls being locked, he was unfortunate, taking out his own bowls, and leaving Bull lying lour and giving him the game. The last head was not played. Bull’s rink played a steady game throughout and took no chances. Every credit .is due to the.Waipawa rink for their consistent play throughout the tournament, and they deserved better luck. At the conclu-
sion of the game cheers were given for both winners and losers. The teams w ere:—
Napiei.—S. Harris, R. R. Woodcock. (’. Cunningham, H. Bull (s), 25. Waipawa.—E McLeod, D. Murdoch, J. Miller, C. A. Critchley (s) 16.
