Sir Andrew Russell left Hastings this morning for Wellington. v Mr. AV. McKinnon,, relieving postmaster at Dunedin, lias been appointed to take charge of the Dannevirke office, vice Mr. C. F. Potter, who has retried. Miss McKane, who has been acting as postmistress at Mohaka, has resigned, and will be replaced by Mrs. Waiter, of Waipukurau. Dr., Valentine. Chief Health Officer, will be in Hastings next week, when he will inspect the site for the proposed Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, rMr. 11. Harrison, formerly actingeditor of the Nelson “Colonist,” has been appointed to the staff of the Cawthron Institute at Nelson. Advice has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company/ Napier, that Mr. XV. C. Daives, one of the directors of the Company’s Board ui London, died on Tuesday. Sister Ellen Donovan, who lias been on a visit to her uncle, Mr. T. Donovan, in Hastings, left this morning on her return to Wellington, where she is ; a hospital nurse. j Mr. E. M. One of the fast disappearing band of old Imperial soldiers who remained m the Colony after the close of the Maori wars died at the Auckland Hospital on Sunday last. This was Air. Charles McCarthy, formerly of the 65tli. Regiment, and an old resident of Newmarket. He had reached his yOth. year.

A highly-rcspectcd old resident of Maungatnroto (North Auckland), Dr. J. Mountaine, was buried on Saturday. Deceased, eanie to New Zealand about 40 years ago, and settled at Maungaturoto. He was born at Dieppe sixtynine years ago, being of French and Irish parentage. In his younger days Dr. Alouutaine was an athlete and a thorough sport. He is survived by- his widow, son and an adopted daughter. Mrs. Tuohy, of Hastings, as next-of-kin of the late Sergt.-Major P. Tuohy, who fought with the Australian forces, received to-day, a badge similar to those issued by the Commonwealth Department to all women, next-of-kin of soldiers who have died as a result of the war. The badge is of white silver, enanieiled in blue and’ bearing the inscription : “Issued by the Defence Department to the women of Australia. For Duty DoneJ’ The following promotions and appointments in the Public Trust Office are announced:—Mr. F. W. Horner, assistant solicitor, head office: Messrs. J. Reid and B. L. After service in Egypt, France, and England—in addition to a period at Anzac shortly after the historic landing there—he returned to New Zealand some time ago.
