Cr. T. Styles (Deputy Mayor of Hastings) left this morning, on a visit to YVellington.
Tho Alayor of Hastings (Air. G. F.bbett) left this morning for Wellington, and he is due back on Alonday. Mr. H. A. Parker, of Sydney, and formerly of Wellington, ex-tennis champion of New Zealand, has arrived in Wellington.
Mr. Justice Salmond sat in Auckland as judge for the first time on Saturday, when lie heard undetended divorce petitions at the Supreme Court. Mr. Justice Stringer and Superintendent Wright have been appointed a board of inquiry to investigate the circumstances wliicit led to the resignation of Detective-Sergeant Mason. The Rev. Thomas Fisher, Vicar of Opotiki has been appointed Anglican Chaplain for the Napier hospital and gpol in the place of the Rev. J. Hobbs who lias removed to Palmerston North. The Hon. AV. J). S. MacDonald (Liberal Leader) received a wireless message on Sunday from Mr. T. M. Alfred White died last week at Linwood aged years, lie was Ixirn ui England, and arrived in New Zealand in LS62. After farming at Portobello, he went to Christchurch -10 years ago. and started business as a bookseller. retiring 22 years later. The Rev. .Rowland George Finch, B.D. (London) formerly vice-principlo of St. Paul’s Missionary College Burgh, Lincolnshire, has been appointed Chaplain of Te Ante College. Mr. Finch will sail from England in time to take HP his duties at the beginning of next year. The. death occurred at To Aroha on ' ■Thursday ot Mr. Henry J. Hawkins, at the age of years. Mr. Hawkins was an orehardist" and small farmer, nnd took a great interest in district affairs. Many years ago he successfully contested the Waikato seat in Parliament. Miss N. W. Anderson, who. was .on the stall of The Hastings District' High School, is spending some months in.th« interior pt British Columbia, in the newly-opened settlement known us the Peace River. district? From there she intends to proceed to Toronto, via the Great Lakes.

On the retirement.of the Rev. AY .J. YVilliams from the editorship of the "Vanguard,” a position which he has occupied for about nine years, the New Zealand Alliance Conference recorded its high appreciation of the great services rendered by him to the cause of prohibition.
It is understood that General Birdwood, after'his return to England, will go to India, where he will take the Northern Command. Ggnerai Birdwood is a Grand Officer de la. Legion d'Honneur, a Grand Officer de la Couronne (Belgium), and possesses the Belgian Croix de Guerre. A baronetcy was treated for him last year.

Afiss Curtis, who has-been appointed to the eliair of agricultural chemistry at the Cawtliorn Institute, Nelson, recent'.y returned to New Zealand from England. She is a daughter of a former "postmaster of Palmerston North, and a niece of the late Mr. A. R. Curtis, formerly one of the proprietors of tho “Feilding Star.”
General Sir William Birdwood arrived in Hastings by the mail train, lust evening, when he was met on the platform and informally welcomed by the Mayor (Mf. G.Ebbett). There was no cere mon v observed on the occasion. Sir Wil’iam is the guest of Major-Gen. Sir Andrew Russell during his stay in the district.
It is officially announced that Lord Jellicoe. Goveriior-General-designate of New Zealand, will, with Lady Jellicoe and family, leave London for the Dominion by the Corinthic on Ailgust 19. Captain Curtis, private secretary to Lord Jellicoe, and an advance party of the new Governor-General's household, left London for New Zealand by the Ruapehu on Thursday hist. Rev. Joseph W. Kemp, who recently accepted the pastorate of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle resigned the pastorate of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, New York City, last year, has been for the past few months preaching and lecturing iu the United States and Canada. He Ims secured a passage to Auckland by the Niagara, leaving Vancouver about the 22nd. instant.
Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., has been elected president of the New Zealand Labour Party. The former president, Mr. J. T. Paul, did not seek re-election, and Mr. Fraser was opposed in the ballot by Mr. J. Read. Mr. F. R. Cook (Christchurch) has been elected '’icepresident) and Air. Moses Ayrton (Palmerston North) secretary.
