A DANGEROUS SITUATION

The New Y’ork “Times, ” Peking correspondent reports that the situation is growing serious as the result of contest , between the militaristic Anfu party and the anti-militarists. It is lit xlei stood that the Anfus will send forces to Peking and the President may be imprisoned in the palace. It is thought fighting is now inevitable.
Wealthy Chinese are taking their valuables' to foreign legations and refuging in foreign hotels and hospitals. Others are fleeing to Tientsin.—(A. and N.Z.)

Portions of Tuan’s troops are advancing against the armies of his opponents, which are based upon Paotinglu, whence the American missionaries ar.: withdrawing under orders that hostilities are imminent. Tuan secured coi siderable financial help, which is of vital importance as Chinese soldiers invariably decline to fight unless paid m advance. Tuan guarantees the safety of foreigners and the population of Peking, where the situation is easies, though complicated. An aeroplane corps at Peking decided to co-operate with Tuan in The event of bembing machines being sent to Poatingfu. Meanwhile, the Chinese expect Tuan’s opponents to tako refuge at Tientsin.—(A. and N.Z.) POWERS* WARNING. MUST BE NO FIGHTING IN PEKING Peking, July 10. The Diplomatic Corps warned the Government that in the event of an uprising. there must not be fighting within" the city, and Peking must not he subject to a bombardment.—(A. and N.Z.)
