H.B.A. AND P. SOCIETY.

[to thb editor- 1 Sir, —The time is opportune for ask- ’ ing tiie reason why the offices of the I Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pas- ! toral Society should be twelve miles distant from its Showgrounds. ] am ■ confident that a similar position does ; not exisit. in this Dominion. The ahsurditv of the arrangement is becoming ' more ridiculous every year. Here is ’ one instance of many which could be

quoted. At Friday's meeting of the H.B. A. and P. Society in their office, Tennyson street, Napier, forty-two •nominations were received for the committee., an analysis of the names received by the secretary shows that thirty-seven nominees live in or around Hastings district. To be strictly correct. a few out of these thirty-seven would have to pass through Hastings to reach Napier. The roll of financial members numbers 1600. It is quite safe to estimate that twelve hundred of these members live much closer to Hastings than Napier, and yet there is no thmiglrf, given for the convenience of lhi* large majority of members. In the annual report of the H.B. A. ami P. Societv the library is valued nt fc6s. I question if a volume leaves.the shelves in the twelve months. If this library was in Hastings many agrieulinrnliw's would avail themselves_ of its books. In Tennyson' street ir is no benefit to anyone. Putting the convenience of the niemhois nf the H.B. A. and P. Societv to one side, commonsense would suggest that the Showground and office shon.'A bo as c ose •ogethcr as possible, hut 12 miles apart is a long wav over the limit. The H.B. Jockov Club wore similarly handicapped some years ago. but the advantage of being close to their base of operations was too obvious to be missed. The club has never regretted the change.—l am, etc., LINCOLN.
