HAWKE’S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY. MEETING,

The above Council met this morning when there were present Messrs T. Mason Chambers, W. Shrimpton, T. E. Crosse, P. P. Neagle, H. M. vampbell M.P., C". C. Smith and H. J. H. Glazebrook. . . The chairman was instructed to report on the question as to whether county employees should be paid by the week jn lieu of by the day. The question of striking a rate over the Petane river districts was left in the hands of the chairman and Cr. Smith to report. It was decided to purchase another metal drav. The chairman stated the truck now’in use was doing good work but he thought the council should confine their purchases to British made articles. Other members agreed witn the chairman CORRESPONDENCE. Public Works Department estimated that the cost of a road through the Waitunga estate would amount to £13136 and offered to contribute £l<oo towards the cost.—The matter was held over. • , Health Department forwarded a draft copy of the Health Bill. The chairman stated that if the Bill becomes law it will involve greater responsibility on the council besides being very costly. It would mean appointing an inspector at a salary oi about £5OO per year.—Consideration pt the matter was deferred. Consideration of the matter was uefeStratiord Borough Council asked for support in asking the Government r<> declare Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday.—Received. Hawera Borough Council asked lor support in securing an exemption ci duty on children’s boots. —Received. The Tikokino Settlers’ Committee and H.B. Education Board asked tor support in securing the erection ot the Howard Agricultural College m Hawke’s Bay. It was agreed to support both requests and to join in entering a strong protest. It was decided to support the Napiei Thirty Thousand Club in planting the road approaches to Napier. RIVER ENCROACHMENT.

Several settlers drew attention to the very serious manner in which the Tutaekuri river is encroaching into tne bank, of the river at what is known as the Hakowhai crossing. Another matter that is complained ot is tne ruthless manner in which poplars and willows have been chopped down along the river bank which were planted there for protection. Un settlers regard the above two matters with very grave concern and are prepared to assist the council in whatever manner is deemed advisable, ihe eng*neers stated that all that was necetsarv was to construct near the crossing several facines at a cost of about £a<» lt was resolved to undertake the work provided the settlers contributed towards the cost.
