the official calm at Tokio strikingly contrasts with lae atmosphere of distrust resulting from newspaper speculations in Japan and abroad.
Critics in the tar East are particularly prone to overlook that the larger benefits ot the Alliance were never greater than to-day. Abrogation would loster revolt throughout the Middle and Near East, and play directly into the hands of the Bolsheviks.
Japan does not object to the British dominions consulting their best interests, but regarding the cabled report that Australia aesires to be considered before the final decisions are reached, -it is felt the Australian position would be made clear without the creation of the erroneous impression that the country is wholly opposed to the Alliance.
Similar news from Washington overlooks provisions of 1919 safeguarding Anglo-American interests. This has caused much heartburning in Japan, but the nation is now reconciled to limitations. That Japan greatly desires good relations with America is not gainsaid. There is widespread anti-Japanese sentiment in China and Russia, the effects of which cannot be ignored.—(“Times.”)
