Sinn Fein's Warfare.

AN ARSON CAMPAIGN. CASTLE DESTROYED. HIGHLANDERS FOR IRELAND. London, May 26. The serious campaign of arson in Ireland is attributed to Sinn Fein. Kil bril tain Castle at Bandon, County Cork, was destroyed, damage being £11)0.000. A tire on a farm at Balrinasloo can.-ed damage to the extent of £40,000. . The Cameron Highlanders, stationed at Aldershot, have been ordered to Ireland- —(A. and N.Z.) THE IRON HAND IN THE VELVET GLOVE. SIR NEVI I. MACREADY IRELAND’S NEW MASTER. towards the end ol April 1914, when Ireland threatened to burst into a blaze of civil war and the country waited for the outbreak in suspense, a strong man was despatched to I Ister to command the troops there and to report to the Army Council on the developments. He acquitted himsell of his delicate task—with the Ulster Volunteers drilling under his very nose—with such tact and skill that h»»earned the gratitude of the War Office without exciting hostility on either side. That man was General Sir Nevtl Macready, now Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, who, as was reportea a lew days ago, is to take military control to turbulent Ireland. Resolution is the keynote of Sir Nevd's character, with tact and personal charm. Every industrial upheaval of the past seventeen years which required delicate handling has been his charge. He it was who dealt with the Belfast riots, the South Wales coal strike, the Tonypandy riots, the strikes at Manchester and Hull, the serious disturbances at the Curmgh in 1914, and the police anjl railway strikes which are a recent memory. In every case an iron firmness marked Sir Neri] Macready's policy; yet his strength is tempered with a knowledge of human nature, and he has a reputation- fol democratic displon»acy. His mflitary career, extending from the Egyptian campaign of 1882 to the Adjutant-Generalship of the Army in 1916, has equipped him with the qualities of a successful soldier, with a wider vision and a great organising capacity than the soldier as a type possesses.' His charm is reflected in the esteem the rank and file of the Metropolitan Police hold him, to which his belief in personal contact with his men and his zeal for improving their lot have largely contributed. A man of iron’, firm and capable. The man for a crisis.
