WELLINGTON TRAMWAYS.
FARES FOLLOW WAGES. Wellington, May 28. The recent increases granted tramwaymen will cost about £40,000 per annum. An Order in. Council limits the fares to 4d. for four sections, and therefore the amount for this distance cannot be increased till the order is varied. The City Engineers reported to the City Council in favour of a minimum cash fare of 2d, rising to ;sd. for six sections. All concession tickets are increased by using these fares, and will range from 1 Jd. to I4d. Mr. Hutchison, Labour member of the Council, moved an amendment to the adoption of the report in favour of deferring increases until the actual effect of higher wages is seen, and then, if more revenue is required, a graduated rate be 'evied on unimproved land values. Mr. Hutchison said the Council was becoming involved in a vicious circle and would be really guilty of profiteering. The amendment was lost bv 13 to 4, only the Labour members voting for it. The new rates were adopted.
