The proposed application of the fortyeight hour week to agriculture wou.d prove disastrous to the employers and workers. Britain’s safety and prosperity depended largely on food production.
A cable from Rome states that the Pope has excommunicated the Catholic Church of Bohemia owing to the ■Reformist movement, particularly the abolition of ecclesiastical celibacy. The Department of Trade and Commerce at Ottawa estimates Canada’s population at 8,835,102. Mr Roberts, the Food Minister, has tendered his resignation in view of the prospective termination of tho Ministry’s activities. It is possible that his resignation may not be "accepted. It is reported in the Lobby of the House of Commons that Mr Roberts is taking up charge of all labour questions on behalf of a well-known firm employing many thousands of hands. He keeps his seat in the House of Commons. The British Government’s Tilnber Department has ceased to operate. It sold its entire stock of 50,000,000 feet of soft timber to a syndicate for £8,005.000 sterling. This is a record deal in timber.
Mr Churchill gave a military dinner at the Military Service Club, London. The guests included the Prince of Wales,. Sir Douglas Haig, Generals Wilson. Rawlinson and Horne, the occasion being Sir Douglas Haig's resignation, and the desire of the Prince to meet the General Staff before his departure for Australasia.
