Matthews Crashes.

AVIATOR SAFE BUT MACHINE SMASHED CROWNING MISFORTUNE. TO SERIES OF DELAYS. (By Cable.—Pre,, Association.—Copyright.) (Received 5, 12.35 p.m.) Delhi, Feb. 3. Capt. Matthews crashed 20 miles from Banderabbas, in Persia. The aviator is safe but the “Wallaby” (the machine) is badly damaged. —(Reuter.) [Capt. Matthews was the first to leave on the England-Australia flight. He left England on October 21 in a Larkin-Sopwith machine—the “Wallaby.” Winking his eye at regulations he decided to fly across Germany. He landed at Cologne and was held up for a long time in Germany by lack of petrol and by bad weather. Eventually he reached Vienna on December Ist but struck bad luck again on crossing into Serbia where he was forced to land for benzine. He was taken prisoner by ignorant frontier guards and detained for some time but eventually escaped. He left Constantinople on January 2nd and later reported from Bagdad that the “Wallaby” was going well.]
