Wellington, Jan. 6. : The situation in the coal industry was unchanged during the holiday*, but it is reported that the miner* are threatening now to reduce output further. Mr. Massey has been in communication with both miners and owners. The owners, it is understood, consider a conference unnecessary, in view of the full. and open discussion that took place last year, but they are willing to meet the miners’ delegates again on certain conditions. One is prior reeumption of normal working method*, if the dispute is not settled in the near future the people ofNew Zealand are likely to suffer from a_ very acute shortage of coal next winter. Accumulation of stocks under present conditions is scarcely nossiole, and most of the large consumers oF coal are living from hand-to-mouth at the present time.
