APPLE EXPORT
[TO TUB SDITOfii-l Sir, —-Regarding the matter of apple, export as a matter of public interest, ' I crave a small space of your esteem- ( ed journal. It will be with g w.it satis- ■ faction orchardists learn’ from jour, last night’s issue that space was al- 1 lotted for 60,000 case of apples, and although contracts have been signed | for delivery of apples into Hastings on ' the assumption that there would be no export. I surely think: that in vew of 1 the low prices contracted for (the mid- 1 season apples such as Gravenstein, i Jonathan, Munroe. Cox, etc., average ’ big and little a tnfle over Id- per lb.) 1 the buyers should annul the contracts. i 1 I contend that no body of men have been his as hard as orchardists during 1 the war, working expenses have in- i creased, cost of living increated u hue .' produce has reached the low money | value and not a word of complaint has I been given expression to. In case I ’ may be thought too much one-sided, I ; may add that the later varieties are , worth a little more, about lid lb- all i sizes. The general public may think ‘ that by exporting, prices of apples left , in the country will be high. They have I only to remember that even now you | can buy apples in our shops at lOd. per | lb., and they are imported from outside. The curious position, is that while J these imported apples fetch that high < price, local grown ready for dessert are i being sold from the orchard at lid and I delivered. So long as the public, will buy their apples in small quantities, there is no escape for them from paying 6d per lb. The remedy is in their own hands. I can prove to your.satisfaction Sir, that the orchardists. is not the cause of high prices. Thanking you in anticipation for your kindness in in- . serting,—l am, etc., ORCHARDHastings, December 31, 1919.
