NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. gisborne"meeting. Gisborne, Jan. 1. The New Zealand Athletic,. Cycle, and Motor-cycle Championship Meeting opened under very favourable weather conditions at the Park Racecourse. The attendance was 4,000. This is the first championship meeting since Auckland in 1913. Competitors were present from all parts of the Dominion. Results follow, all events being New Zealand championships unless stated otherwise, one lap equal to 1 mile 79 yards:— MOTORING. New Zealand Heavy-weight Championship 15 laps.—P. Coleman (Palmerston North) 1, G. Powell (Gisborne) 2, L. Mangham (Palmerston North) 3. The only starters. Won by 400 yards. Time 14.48 1-5. Poverty Bay Light-weight Championship.—R. Jones (Gisborne) 1, W. Davy (Gisborne) was disqualified. Davy came first, but was disqualified on the ground of crossing while turning a comer. J ones’ time was 6.30 4-5.

The Caledonian Society’s two days’ sports began to-day in fine, calm but overcast weather. There was a large attendance (the gates took over £300), which would have been larger ■ but for the threatening morning. The sports of- all kinds were the best for years, kind there were no inishaps. Features of the running were the performances of S. Coppin (Timaru) in the sprints, and of G. Getson (Christchurch) in the long runs, and the cycling of Joyce, of Waimate,
