A Palmerston North resident, who was detected by .Constable O’Reilly taking roses off a bush in the Square at Palmerston North, was recently fined £5 and 7/- costs for the offence. The Borough Council decided to award £lO to Constable O’Reilly, and sent a letter to tne police thanking them for instigating a successful prosecution, and asking them not to relax their efforts in this direction. One councillor said he would Tike to congratulate the Magistrate for making the fine so heavy, and another said that, taking into consideration the amount of vandalism being donp by people who should know better, he would no«. begrudge the £lO to the constable. Albert Cutts, trainer for Sir George Clifford, who had been absent for ten days in the North Island with several of Sir George Clifford’s racehorses, arrived home in Christchurch on Wednesday, to find that during his absence his residence at Riccarton had been ransacked by burglars, and jewellery, clothing, linen, various articles of attire, and some household effects had been stolen, the value roughly being about £2OO. The burglary took place on Tuesday night. That is known because a friend had gone through the house daily and the last visit, made on Tuesday afternoon, disclosed that everything was in order.
The “New Zealand Times” men-; tions that, by a peculiar coincidence the mile handicap at the Caledonian sports in Wellington on Saturday was won by a son of Mr. Thomas Wyeth, of Masterton, who carried off the two mile championships at a Caledonian sports meetng no less than fifty-one years ago. Mr. Wyeth, who was present, was justly proud of his son’s performance. The race was won by about eight yards, and the winner caused much excTEemenu by passing his opponents in the last lap.’
