HASTINGS REPATRIATION.
COMMITTEE MEETING
The committee met last evening, when eighteen applications were relieved. Five wero for employment, four for purchase of furniture, four for purchase of tools, three for assistance in training.—Two wero adjourned. Mr. Spence, who has been acting as secretary during the absence in hospital of Mr. E. H. T. Dunn, stated' that he regretted he was unable to continue the work at present, and it was decided to apply to headquarters for a clerk to act until Mr. Dunn was sufficiently recovered. It was also decided to carry on the work of tho committee in their own office, which would be maintained by the Public Works Department. They hoped to be in their new office during next week.
Following returned soldiers are on the books for employment: —Seven farmwork, one ploughman, one shepherd, one ironmonger’s assistant, one clerk and one general. The number of men who made application for work, and have been placed during last month, is eight. Mr. G. Spence, who has been acting secretary of the committee, states that ho has received a letter from headquarters concerning tho medical treatment of men who have been discharged. It had been decided that in cases of discharged soldiers, under care of tho Repatriation Committee, who might be benefited by further treatment, orthopaedic or otherwise, local committees could submit their names to the A.D.M.S. of the district in which they reside. The A.D.M.S. would arrange to have the man examined by the Travelling Medical Board, and the board wouid ascertain whether he could benefit from further treatment, and 4 if so, report as to tho best centre where such treatment could bo carried out.
