PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES.

Wellington, July 5. The Government has decided that no subsidies shall be paid in respect of the festivities arranged when H.M.S. New Zealand and Admiral Jellicoe came to the Dominion, but all expenditure made by local bodies will be validated. . The Minister of Internal Affairs states that the Government decided that subsidies provided by the State on moneys collected or voted by local authorities for the celebration of peace shall be paid only in sums expended for celebrations on the official day, July 19. The Minister said also that railway services for the occasion would be provided only for July 19, and these services would have to be kept down to the minimum owing to the shortage of coal. At a meeting of the Wellington City Council yesterday afternoon the Mayor referred to the latest proposals for the Peace Celebrations, and said he had invited the citizens to observe a holiday on Monday as well as on Saturday. It would be impossible to hold the children’s demonstration on Saturday. The council endorsed the Mayor’s pro posals.—Press Association.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT FOOD.

Auckland, July 4. The men on the transport Tahiti, which arrived in Auckland yesterday had many complaints to make about the quality of the food given them during the latter stages of the journey. They stated that practically since leaving Colon they had no vegetables or fresh meat, the meals for the most part being confined to bully beef and canned beans and peas. The tea was, so some of the men said, undrinkable on many occasions and the bread was sour about every third day. IRON TRADES UNION. Wellington, July 5. The formation is announced of an Iron Trades Industrial Council comprising the amalgamated society of engineers, the united boiler makev> and iron ship builders, the united society of moulders and metal workers’ assistants. The purpose is to create greater unity throughout all the steel industry and to advise and protect members in any lawful manner.
