Sydney papers report that, according to a passenger on the steamer Pukaki, which arirved in Sydney' from Ocean Island and Nauru, the ex-German phosphate island, regard as wild and impossible tl'c recent report that Australia and New Zealand are to be given the joint man - agement of the island. It was pointed out .that there are at present three different administrations m the island. Civil control is exercised by Fiji : an Australian military' force is acting as garrison, and the Naw Department has control of the. wireless station, which Fas been in daily use during the past three yea i . Ma ny inqui ri e s are being marie regarding land titles, but flo definite information i s available as everything depends upon the final decision of the Peace Conf ent'nee regarding the future of the island and its rich phosphate deposits. A few umntf -s ago the natives in Nauru 'n I<l a meeting, and c,-irried a resolution expressing their desire to remain under British rule.
