Mr and Mrs H. E. Troutbeck, of Napier, leave by the Niagara this week on a holiday trip to England. The Flora which arrived at Auckland to-day from the Eastern Pacific reports that the steamer Maitai, previously reported to he ashore on a reef at Rarotonga, suffered severely during the bad weather and now is a hopeless wreck. —Press Association. There is news from Raratonga that 300 returned native soldiers broke into shops and stores, which were more or less wrecked, and jtook away or damaged goods to the value of £l,OOO. The Sergeant of the police quelled the disturbance with a revolver. The steamer Flora, which arrived at Auckland to-day from Eastern Pacific Ports, was commandeered to convey the soldiers to their homes on the various islands. An Auckland fruit auctioneer states that more than one third of the cargo of bananas by the Talune, comprising 16,000 cases and 3,00‘J bunches was useless as the result of being cooked while the vessel was quarantined at the Auckland harbour. Permission to land the fruit before quarantine expired was asked for and refused. —Press Association.
