NAPIER BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The above Council met last nightPresent: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. H. Hill), and Crs. Plowman, Wood, Hill, Ashcroft, Wright. Thompson, Harvey, Runciman, Mulvanah, Creagh and Latham. CORRESPONDENCE.

Department of Internal Affairs forwarded gazette declaring Wednesday to be the statutory closing day within the Borough.—Received. F. Pirani. Chairman Wanganui Education Board intimated that he is prepared to give a war lecture together with an address on the new English Education Bill on April J th. —Approved. admission to the lectures to be free. Minister of Public Works stated that he has nothing to add to liis letter of the 18th. ulto. concerning the Westshore Bridge Loan.—Cr. Mulvanah moved : “That the attention of the Minister of Public Works be drawn to the fact that this council is of opinion that an iueidence of the tax (through failure on the part of the Napier Harbour Board to complete, the making of the southern embankment within the terms of its contract with the Public Works Department) should be placed upon the citizens of Napier. —-Seconded by Cr. M right and carried.

Dcvonport Borough Council forwarded the following resolution: - "That this Council strongly urges upon the Government the advisability of repatriating as soon as possible all alien prisoners of war both military and civilian at pre sent interned in the Dominion and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Hie Acting Prime Minister, the member for the district and every other Local Authority in Nevi Zealand, respectfully bespeaking their support- and cooperation herein.- Received. Palmerston North Borough Council forwarded the. following' resolution : "That; as a further inducement to( have pigs killed at public abattoirs, all councils be requested to make representations to the Minister for Agriculture to increase the coiupensatiou for condemned animals from 2d. per lb. as now paid to sl> per cent, of the value of the pigs.— Received. J. B. Fielder and C. 11. Edwards, executors of the late Mr. Colenso’s estate, protested against the Ccunc’l applying t<> the Supreme Court for a variation of that portion of th: bequest. dealing with school prizes. - Resolved that steps be taken to carry out the wishes of the Council.

8. J. V. Ashton, Wellington, asked if the Council is prepared to lease the Municipal Theatre for pictures ami if so on what conditions. Referred to Theatre Committee.

Napier Gas Company pointed out that a majority of the street lamfjs are in such a condition as to hardly bear cleaning, and suggesting that it would be better to discontinue the lamps altogether pending replace ment by electricity.—Left in the hands of the engineer to report on. C. Beamish drew attention to the excessive speed of motor cars.— The Town Clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the police to the matter.

J. Holmes protested against vehicles being allowed to cross the footpaths at the junction with Thackeray street and the new road to the Railway Station.- Matter receiving attention.

TLB. Rugby _Union asked permission to use Nelson and McLean Parks for the coming football season on the same conditions as in the past.- Referred to the Parks Committee.
