Mrs. R. tV. Hansard, of Napier, left by mail train yesterday morning on a holiday visit to Wellington. Inspector Redmond, of the Postal Department, Wellington, left Napier by ear to-day for Wairoa. Air, W. Clarke, Government wool valuer, and Mrs. Clarke, arrived in Napier, from Wellington yesterday. Air .and Mrs. Kinder and Airs. White, of Porangahau motored through to Napier yesterday on a visit- and are at the Masonic. Mr. W. Forrest, officer in charge of the Timaru Telegraph Office, has received notice of his promotion te the position of Postmaster at Roto rua. Airs. W. H. Lean, of the Marine Parade Hotei and Miss. Prendergast, left b.y the Napier mail train yesterday morning on a fortnight’s Holiday to ‘Wellington. Amongst the list of awards for distinguished service on the field is Private R. J. Burnside, who was the recipient of a Military Medal. Private Burnside, who is well-known in Hastings, enlisted with the Mounted Rifles with the 7th. Reinforcements. The remains of Air. Robert Timble were interred in the Hastings cemetery this afternoon, when a representative number of citizens followed in the funeral procession. The Rev. AL A. Rugby Pratt conducted the graveside service. Mr. A. Stewart, who recently retired after serving over 30 years as bosun in the employ of the Napier Harbour Board, was on Tuesday met by members of the staff and presented with a case of cutlery, as a token of esteem. He is succeeded by Air. E. Goodall. The following Justices of the Peace have been appointed:— Messrs. C. H. Edwards, J. W. Findlay and H. A. Keesmg, Napier'; .Messrs. G. Thorburn and J. Al. Condliffe, lat,? of Canterbury College, has been appointed senior instructor in economies for all New Zealand camps in England, under the N.Z.E.F. education scheme. The Chambers of Commerce conference in Wellington elected the following officers : —President, Mr. W. Gow, Dunedin; vice-president, Mr. James McLellan, Wellington „ executive, Alessrs. Mr. William Charles Badden, inden: agent and importer of Wellington. and proprietor of 1 the Indian Art Emporium in Heretaunga street, Hastings (Aliss. Keith, manageress) was found dead in his bed, in Caroline s.reet, Wellington, a lew mornings ago. A pleasing ceremony took place at the Hastings Bowling Green yesterday afternoon, when »,he niemlrers of the Bowling Green Croquet Club assembled. for the purpose presenting the retiring secretary. Airs. L. F. Pegk-r, with a token of their regard, in the form of a handsome vanity locket. In making the presentation, Mr. J. E. Hall, president of the Bowling Club, spoke in very high terms of Airs. Pegler’s work as secretary or the Croquet Club during the past seven years. Mr. L. F. Pegler responded on behalf of his; wife, thanking the members for their gift and for their kindly references. A number of visitors from other clubs were on the lawn and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent.
