AT NAPIER, There was a fair attendance at thy Athenaeum, last night at ths meeting held in connection with the carrying out of the city beautification scheme and in furtherance of the recommendation of Crs. Wright and Mulvanah. The Mayor, Mr. H. Hill, who presided pointed out the necessity of the citizens co-opera-tion in this scheme to make the city beautiful and second to none in the Dominion.

Miss Cowan, the young American gave an interesting description of America’s beautifying methods, cleaning up systems, agricultural plots and other interesting subjects. A letter was received from Mr. W. A. Armour suggesting certain works in Shakespear road. Mr R-.C. Wright referred to the possibilities at Napier South and eulogised the example of Messrs W. and G. Nelson, in their promise to make George’s Drive a beautiful river front.

Mr. E. Mulvanah explained that works at New Plymouth, where admirable rivalry existed between various portions of the town. .He suggested that the city be divided in io four districts. Mr.. E. Bissell referred to tree planting at Port Ahuriri and suggested that more attention be given to the existing trees etc., there. Mr. Mulvanah then moved that the town be divided into four parts for the purpose of forwarding city beautification. Mr.. G. Latham seconded, and said it was necessary to let the people know that they were going to have some power in the matter. Mr. L. T. Bisson pointed out that it would be necessary for the scheme that the engineer should supervise works.

Mr. Mulvanah said a large amount of ppwer should be given the committees, as it was likely to have a dam-pening effect on the .work if ‘hey were to be controlled by the council. The motion was carried.

Discussion on the subject them followed. It was decided that four committees be formed to control the districts, and that these committees be under the direction of the Borough Engineer. , It was decided that the four Sections be Port Ahuriri, Napier South, the hills, and the town.

Mr. G. Latham suggested that Mr. Mulvanah ■ should act as convenor of the Napier South Committee, and wished to be one of bls’ assistants. His (Mr. Latham’s) worldly interests centered round Napier South. He believed there were several small places outside it such as London and a number of other places, but- he didn’t know much about them. From the meeting the following committees (were then elected for the four districts : — Port Ahuriri: Messrs Mulvanah, Bissell, Hill. Ashchoft. Mrs. Mulvanah. (Convenor, Mr. Bissell). Naptier South: Mrs. Venables, Miss Duncan, Mrs. Duncan, Messrs Hudson. Clapham, Clark, Lowe, Rocknell, Lock. (Convenor, Mr. G. Latham).

(Convenor, Mr. H. Latham). It was decided that the committees get to work immediately to get trees etc., for planting purposes. It was unanimously decided that the Railway Department be asked to immediately act with a view to improving the present disgraceful state of the Napier railway yards. The meeting closed with a vote .of thanks to Miss Cowan and the chairman.
