A MEAT CONTROLLER.
Melbourne, August 18.
The Federal Government has appointment a meat administration with Sir Owen Cox as controller in order to relieve the shortage. It has been decided to release supplies of meat awaiting export to Great Britain which arc unable to obtain despatch owing to the dearth of shipping. The administi ation will sell to retail butchers sufficient to cover the shortage. BIG EARTHQUAKE SOMEWHERE. (Received 17, 11.45 a.m.) Sydney, Aug. 17. The largest earthquake ever recorded a.t’Sydney was registered at the Observatory on Thursday night, a distance of 3,451 miles from Sydney. The shock was so violent that the pointer of the senunograph was displaced.—(A. and N.Z.) NOTES FROM VARIOUS STATES. (Received 17, 11.45 a.m.) The I.W.W.
