Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie Smith, of Tutira. who have been visiting Napier, returned home to-day. Mrs. Charles Nathan, of Waikato, %ho has been visiting Napier, returned to her home this morning.
Lieutenant Setter, who has been on a brief departmental visit to Napier. wturnecl to Wellington to-day.
Miss Ryan, of Tasman street, Wellington. who has been visiting Napier, returned south by mail train this morning.
Staff-Sergt.-Major Vivian Ennor, of the Trentham Instructors’ Staff, who has been spending leave in Napier, returned to camp to-day. Miss Teresa McEnroe, Welling j ton’s gifted vocalist, who lakes in the Hastings Orchestral Society’s, concert to-morrow evening, arrives by the mail train to-night. Mrs. Gould, niece of the late Mr. W. J. Tabutcau, accompanied by her little daughter, arrived in Napier from Wellington last evening and is staying at the Caledonian. Mr. z\. Williams, of Makiirctu, who has been visiting Wairoa returned by car yesterday Mr. J. Blumicll and Mr. J. Fielding, of Wairoa, arrived in Napier yesterday on a. visit. Mr. Walter McCarthy, of Napier, underwent another operation at tt private hospital yesterday, and his many friends will be pleased to learn that, tlie operation was most successful. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Blyth, who have been in Napier for some weeks, returned to Dannevirke to-day. Mrs Blyth hais been an inmate of a private hospital here for some time but is now convalescent. Another of Auckland’s old pioneers, Mr. Samuel Blomfield. has died, aged 82 years. Deceased w«» one of the Albertland settlers. a.nd arriver in Auckland in the ship Gertrude in 1862. Messrs G. W. Venables and T. B. Burnaid, the newly elected members of the Hanke’s Bn\ Education Board were at, yesterdays meeting extended a hearty we-icome by the chairman. Professor G. S. Hale, formerly of Otago Universiiy, recently attained the 87th. aimiversary of his birth. On the same day he .received news that, his son, Captain G. C.. Sale. R.E.. had been awarded a Military Cross. Althomr’i Mr. 11. W. Bishop, S.M. of Christ church, retires on superannuation, it is understood, states the “Railway Review,” that, arrangements have been made for him to cominue as chairman of the Railway Appeal Board. Roach was at- yesterday's Hawke's Bay Education Board meeting on tho motion of Mr. G. Wildish, seconded by Mr. G. McKay, unanimously reel eet ed ehairn mi t. Members eulogised Mr. Roach’s pant valuable work and Mr. Roach in turn thanked t’leni for their suviport and assistance. Mr. J. Clark Thomson was elected deputy chairman. The death occurred last- night, after a long illness, of Miss Flora, Campbell, eldest daughter of Mr. Donald Gompbell, Fitzro.v Avenue, Hastings. Deceased, who was 25 years of age. was for a. number of years employed in the firm of West.crmiui ami Co., drapers, and was held in popular esteem by all whom she came in contact,. Her death will lie deeply regretted by a large circle ot friends._ The remains will be interred in tho Havelock North cemetery to-morrow jj afternoon. *
We regret to record the death which took place yesterday, of a highly respected resident of Hastings,' M iss. .Eliza Shaw, at the residence of her friend. -M rs. Gascoyne, Market street, with whom she lias resided for z over twenty years. Deceased, who had been ailing for some lime, was 70 years of age. She was a native of Ireland, and came to New Zealand when she was very young. The remains were interred 'in the’Hastings cemetery this afternoon. the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Blathwayt.
