Mr P. C. Corliss, Commissioner of Stamps, arrived in Hastings last night. Sir James Allen will remain in the South Island until after the election for the Southern Maori seat on Feb. ruary 21st.

Miss Ruby Weston, who has been on a visit to Mr and Mrs J. Hogan, Hastings, left on her return to Auckland this morning. Dr. G. E. Morrison, political adviser to the Chinese -Government, who has been touring New Zealand for the past few weeks, arrived at Auckland from Rotorua on Saturday evening.

Staff-Captain Tottenham, who for some time was Provost Marshal at Samoa, and who went Home for duty last year, and was appointed to staff duty in France, is now Provost Marshal in Rome. Mr. R. Pufflett, one of the H.B. County- Council’s overseers, who recently entered Cl special camp, nas been discharged as unfit for active service and has resumed his duties with the Council,

Mr. IV. H. Robertshaw, accountant in the Bank of Australasia at Invercargill, has been promoted to the position of manager at New Plymouth, and will be succeeded by' Mr. T. G. Hurst, of NewPlymouth, The Rev. Father O’Beirne, of Carterton, -who has been in crarge of the South Wairarapa parish during the past two years, leaves next month for England, where he will take up hospital work in connection with the Church.

Mr. Edward G. M. C. Kenny, Government Land Valuer, was last week thrown from his horse at Collingwood and so seriously injured that- he died. The deceased was born at the Hutt in May, 1860, and was the eldest son of the* Hon. C. A. W. T. Kenny, M.L.C.' Lieutenant L. A. Hill, brother of Mrs M. A. Rugby Pratt, of Hastings, is “'returning on duty” by a transport due early next month. Thia officer, whose younger brother was lately killed in action in France, left New Zealand with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force and has served throughout the war in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Flanders. Leaving New Zealand as a private, he has won his promotion to commissioned rank on the field. Lieutenant Hill’s father is a. Maori war veteran, who in those turbulent times served for a period as guide to Von Tempsky. Squadron Commander K. S. Savory, R.F.C., who was the pilot, of the great Handley Page biplane, which flew in eight stages from England to Constantinople and bombed the Goeben. as recorded in yesterday’s issue of the ‘“Tribune,” is abrother of Mrs. C. J. S. Padden, who was resident in Hastings four years ago. Her husband. Captain Padderg left New Zealand with the Main Body, in command of the Otago Mounteds. He was wounded in action on Gallipoli, necessitating the amputation of one leg. Up to the time her husband was incapacitated for further service, Mrs. Padden was engaged nursing in an English hospital. Her brother. Squadron Commander Savory, before the war was studying for the law, and at the outbreak of hostilities he joined the Royal Flying Corps. He has since seen much service and besides gaining rapid promotion has won the Distinguished Service Medal. Lord Carncvw, rrirector of tho London City and Midland Bank Ltd who has accepted a seat on the London Board of the Bank of New Zealand, was formerly known as Sir Arthur Nicholson, and was created a Baron in 1916: the Baronetcy was created in 1637. He was Permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 1919 to 1916, when he retired. He was born in 1849. and was educated at Ruabv and at Brasenose College. Oxford, but left before taking his degree. He was in the Foreign Office from 1870 io 1874. during two years of that period being assistant private secretary to the Embassy at Berlin from 1874 to 1876, second -e< imarv to the Legation atPekin from 1876-7, and at Berlin from 1-874 to 1876: second secretary at Constantinople, 1879-8-1: charge d’Affaires.
