NAPIER MAIN SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Napier Main School Committee was held last night, the members present being Messrs. J. C. Thomson (chairman), VV. Kirk, G. Frater, R_ C. Wright, W. Rose, R. L. Paterson and Rev. J. A. Asher. The Chairman reported on the cleanliness of the school, and it was resolved to send a letter of congratulation to the caretaker. The headmaster’s report was as follows “The school reopened on Tuesday, sth inst., with an attendance of 560, or slightly higher than the attendance on the opening day last year. The average attendance for the week has been 563. Fiftyseven new pupils have been admitted, giving a roll number of 620. As usual, a number of pupils have not yet put in an appearance, and consequently are losing the foundation of the whole year’s work. There is a matter -1 should like to refer to here, in order that as much publicity may be given to it as possible, namely, a report has been circulated to the effect that owing to the scattered nature of our school, we are not allowed to admit any pupils who are not residing in our district. This is absolutely without foundation, as owing to the number of buildings at our disposal we' have room for a number more pupils, and until we become overcrowded no such restriction is likely to be placed upon us. “In the November examinations, from Standard 6, 40 pupils gained Proficiency certificates and five gained certificates of Competency. “The following gained free places on the results of the Junior National Scholarship examination: — James Kerr, Thelma Pickering, Madge Prentice, Derce Williams. “The following changes have taken place in the staff Miss W. Gordon (probationer) and Mr. E. R. Murphy (pupil teacher) completed their term of service and are entering the Training College at the end of this month. Miss N. Finnie, third-year pupil-teacher, resigned as from 31st January. “Mr. C. Sorrell and Miss Jennings have been appointed to the positions vacated by Miss Finnie and Mr. Murphy.’
