The South African Party’s Congress passed a resolution declaring its willingness to reunite with the Nationalists on certain conditions, including the maintenance of the Union constitution and the carrying out of the obligations connected therewith.
Delegates emphasised that they could nave nothing to do with the Nationalists' republican propaganda which would be fatal to any possibility of re union. Mr. Herzog, leader of the Party, said that German and English imperialists were equally intolerant. There was no necessity fcr South Africa to participate in The war. Did it pay South Africa to belong to the Empire .’ He held that it did not. The Government policy had caused a revolutionary spirit but he did not believe the pe-op.e could be so stupid as to entertain any revolutionary schemes. They had a free constitution, but not free Ministers, who were only the agents of the Government.
