AIR RAID ON COURTRAI.

A British air , squadron bombed the German barracks, automobile park and munitions sheds at Courtrai on Tuesday, doing enormous damage. Twenty soldiers were killed or wounded. WAR ON THE RED CROSS. In the House of Commons, Lord Robert Cecil confirmed the reported English, French, and Spanish arrangement in respect to the safe E assage of hospital ships. He said e hojped this would end the enemy’s attacks thereon, but Germany’s definite assurance had not yet been received. CHANNEL TUNNEL SCHEME(Received 1", 1.30 p.m.) London, Aug. 16. In the House of Commons Mr. Bonne Law stated that the Cabinet had most carefully considered the proposal to build the Channel tunnel, and after consultation with naval and military advisers Cabinet was still of the opinion that it was not practicable to proceed with the work in wartime. UNITED STATES. PRO-GERMANS AND TRAITORS PLENTIFUL. ROOT URGES EXECUTIONS. (Received 17, 3 0 p.m.) New York, Aug. 16. Senator Elihu Root created an enormous sensation _by his speech condemning the leniency which is being shown to pro-Germans in the United States. He said: “Pro-Ger-mans and traitors in and out of Congress are endeavouring to make America’s preparations so ineffective as to cause our manhood to I meet defeat in the firing line. They are covering themselves with the cloak of prdfended Americanism. If we are corimetent and fit for our liberty, we will find them out and get at them. There are men in New York who ought to be shot to-mor-row at sunrise for treason. There are also in New York editors deserving of execution for treason, and sooner or later they will get it.”

WOUNDED AMERICANS. REPORTED ARRIVING FROM FRANCE. (Received 17, 3.0 p.m.) A’ashington, Aug. 16. The Government has no information regarding the report from London that American wounded soldiers are arriving in England from France.
