A Sydney cable announces the death of Mr 11. Sconie a member of the Legislative assembly. Mr IV. J. Tabuteau, of Napier, who recently underwent a slight optical operation, is now convalescing.
A London cable states that Sir Edward Letchworth has resigned the Masonic secretaryship, and that Mr Colville Smith has succeeded him.
Mr Charles D. Kennedy, County Engineer, who in companj’ with Mrs Kennedy has been on a visit to Japan, the Islands etc., is due back in Napier on September Ist. The following members of the Napier Orchestral society are aC present on active service : —Mr F. Cooper (’cello) Mr Cedric White (flute), Mr Bert Twining (violin), Mr C. Napier (flute), Mr F. C. Pearce (cornet). Mr J. Prendeville, L.L.8., of Eketahuna, has been appointed Crown Solicitor at Wellington, in succession to Mr V. R. S. Meredith, who is leaving to practice his profession at Auckland. Mr Prendeville is the son of a former schoolmaster at Makara, and was educated at Wellington.
