NORWEGIAN STEAMER SUNK [AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASS’N.] (Received 17, 11.30 a.m.) Christiania, Aug. 16. A Norwegian steamer, “Bestum,” has been torpedoed. The crew were rescued. THE WEEKLY LOSSES. BIG REDUCTION IN SINKINGS. [AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASS’N.] London, Aug. 16. The Admiralty has issued the following return in connection with the submarine blockade for the week ending August 12th: — Arrivals 2776 Sailings 2666 Sinkings — Over 1600 tons 14 Under 1600 tons 2 Unsuccessfully attacked.. 13 Fishing boats sunk 0 The figures for the previous week and the aggregate for the past twenty-five weeks are as follows: — ilrrivals 2673 64,472 Sailings 2796 64,646 Sinkings — Over 1600 tons 21 487 Under 1600 tons .... 2 169 Unsuccessfully attacked 13 436 FRENCH. (Received 17, 10.0 a.m.) London, Aug. 16. The French Admiralty’s report on the submarine campaign during the week ending August 12 gives the following figures, those in the previous week’s report being shown in parentheses • — Arrivals 1010 (848) Departures 1028 (934) Sunk over 1600 tons .. 1 (4) Sunk under 1600 tons.. 3 (2) Unsuccessfully attacked 5 (6) ITALIAN. Rome, Aug. 16. The Italian Admiralty’s report on the submarine campaign during the week ending August 12 gives the following figures, those in the previous week’s report being shown in parentheses:— Arrivals 550 (487) Departures 509 (442) Steamers 6 (~) Small sailers 5 (3) The following return shows the amount of British shipping in each week since February 18, the vessels over 100 tons that were sunk and the number of vessels that were unsuccessfully attacked, fishing boats being disregarded: —
