Mr. IL E. Bailey left Hastings this morning on a business visit to Auckland.
Mr. MacGregor vVatsonley left Napier this morning for Wellington, where he has been appointed to the ballot branch of the Defence Department.
The Hon. IV. D. S. MacDonald left Hastings by motor car at six o’clock this morning for Wellington. He will re.turn to Hastings on Monday next. The Rev. A. B. Chappel, of Whitely Church, New Plymouth has been appointed assistant secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, at a salary of £3OO per year. There were 73 applicants.
Captain J. A. Hayward, assistant harbourmaster at Wellington, who died late on Monday evening after a very brief illness, was born in IS6B, and was a son of the late Captain Hayward, for many years harbourmaster at Catlins River. Mr. R. Douglas Brown, of Messrs McCulloch and Butler’s staff, whose name appeared in the list of balloted men published in the “Tribune” on Tuesday evening, went into camp ten days ago with the 26th Reinforcements. Mr. Brown had previously offered himself on three occasions for active service.
The diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. 0. T. Perrin, of Riddiford St.. Newtown, was celebrated last Thursday, when many of their 'riends met them at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Newtown. There are six sons and three daughters living, and here are also 31 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The Rev. A. Hodge (Napier), has been appointed Senior Congregational Chaplain to the Wellington Xl’litarv _ District, which includes the provincial districts of Wellington. Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki, .ogether with the counties of Jhura, Cook, Waikohu and Waiapu.
A social organised by Messrs H. \n»,worth, L. Clarke, and Staunton was held in the Methodist Hall last evening in honour of Mr. Leslie Clarke’s 20th birthday. There were a large number of guests present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Dancing, games, cards, and instrumetal items formed the programme, those contributing being Misses Neilsen, N. AlcKeesick and A. Clark, and Messrs IL Ainsworth, T. Nikera, P. Harrison, and H. McKe.esick. An appetising supper was provided by Airs. Clarke. The singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and the National Anthem brought the evening’s entertainment to a close at midnight.
The death is announced from Nelson of Dr. Leonard George Boor jn his 92nd year. He was educated at Christ’s Hospital, London. After taking his medical course at Westminster Hospital he practised for about four years in London. His health failing, he decided to come out to New Zealand and take up land. But upon his arrival in Wellington in 1854 he found such a demand for his services as a doctor that he resumed the practis e of his profession. He resided first at the Hut and then at Wellington. After a. short experience of farming at Masterton, he accepted in 1870 the appointment of surgeon to the Nelson Hospital and Asylum. He held this position for nearly 27 years, but resigned on account of his advanced ago in 1597. Dr. Boor married Miss Arnold (a near relative of Dr. Arnold, of Rugby), who predeceased him in 1891. His four daughters, who survive him are Airs. Tennent, of Invercargill, Airs Kempthorne, wife of Archdeacon Kempthorne, of Bright water. Airs Burnett, of Woodville, and Aliss M. Boor of Nelson.
