ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER

DRUNKEN MAN’S VICIOUS ACTS. Auckland, Jan. 26. A middle-aged man, Thomas Edward Watts, or Skelton, was charged at the Police Court to-day with the attempted murder of his wife. Alice Mary Skelton, at Pahl on January 14th. The case was remanded till Wednesday. It is alleged that accused had been drinking heavily and quarrelled with his wife, expressing his intention of cutting her throat. He left the room, and in his absence Mrs. Watts started to leave the house with her six year old baby. As she was approaching the gate accused was seen by a neighbour following her with an open razor. Before ac--1 cused could reach her the neighbour had shut the gate. The man was apparently under the impression that : the woman was in the neighbours i house and went thither with an axe and a flat spear. He made a lunge 'at the neighbour and was evaded. 'Accused then went to the front door i and smashed it with an axe.
