France will never win, nor will she be able to make a more favourable peace than now.” [Tire, French Senate’s resolution on the 24th inst. embodied the same sentence as the one addressed to the enemies of France by the Revolutionary Convention in 1193, that 'France cannot make peace with enemies occupying her territory.”]

VARIOUS FUNDS. HASTINGS. Belgian Xmas Day Collection. — Previously acknowledged. £3 13/-; Mrs. Roach’s table, £2 5/6; total, £5 18/6. FOOTBALL JERSEYS FOR SOLDIERS. In our issue of Saturday appeared an appeal for the sum of £l5 for the purpose of purchasing a set of 20 football jerseys and caps in the colours of the province for use of Hawke’s Bay soldiers who are serving on the western front. Similar appeals were made in Manawatu, Wairarapa and Taranaki districts, and in each case the amount required was immediately forthcoming. It is probable that the matter’ has been overlooked locally owing to the appeal having been made when the public mind is pre-occupied with Christmas festivities. We refer our readers to the former appeal, and commend it as worthy of a generous and immediate response. The following donations are acknowledged:—M.A.R.P. 5/-. J.R.F. 5/-. S.J.H 5/-,*E.J.F. 2/6, A.B. 2/6. AXL C. 2/6, total £1 2/-.
