THE COMMANDEERED CLIPS.
[to the editor.] Sir,—Now that there is a likelihood of the Governments commandeering the woolclips, the question arises as to what they are going to do about the scouring of that portion of the clip which the farmers of the district generally scour, consisting; of pieces, bellies, locks and dirty fleece wool. I maintain that these wools should be scoured in New Zealand. I feel sure if this was dohe that we would he helping the Old Country in the great war in which she is now engaged. As the secretary of the Canterbury Fellmongery and Tanners’ Union stated in last night’s issue the wool needs to be as near manufacturing requirements as possible. The local fellmongery and wool scouring works employ a great amount of labour and a large sum of money is paid annual!} 7 to the emplo} 7 ees. Last season, at my own works, for the five or six months of employment 1 paid out over £9OO. Therefore I feel that it is the duty of the Government to support all such home industries as much as possible, and as I previously mentioned the. wool must be scoured before it can be manufactured. 1 think it would be advisable for the local fellmongers and woolscourers to call a meeting to discuss the matter and endeavour to prove to the Government that it would be beneficial to them and the Home Government to have as much scouring as possible done in New Zealand. The very high prices and keen competition ruling at the last London wool sates will prove that the wool should be scoured.— I am, etc..
