[EEUTEB'S TELEGRAMS. .1 Ottawa, Oct. 25.

Mr. Drayton, chairman of the Canadian Railway Commission, is forwarding a proposal to the Imperial Government that all ships and men now used by the Admiralty between Great Britain and Canada and Australia should be maintained on the present service for five years after the war carrying merchandise instead of munitions with the idea of preserving trade between Great Britain and the Dominios. He also sugngests an inter-imperial board to use captured German ships and build up a service.

Sydney, Oct. 23. Connell’s damages caused by the fire in his grocerj* warehouse are over £70,000.

The police are convinced that it was of incendiary origin owing to many suspicious circumstances during the fire. An explosion occurred leaving a smell of gunpowder or gelignite. The water supply was deliberately cut off several times. The outbreak resembled other mysterious fires. The building was not fitted with sprinklers, and the alarm was disconnected with the brigade. Two attempts to fire a block in King street were frustrated. Resin, spirit and candles were used.

The annual report of the Australian branch of the British Red Cross states that the past year’s expenditure amounted to £580,000, including £339,000 for goods for the front.
