DANNEVIRKE.
■ After a week’s mixture of weather it has at last cleared up, and promises to be fine for to-morrow, when the postponed opening of the Dannevirke Bowling Club’s green will take place, also the High School sports, an annual fixture that attracts considerable interest. In connection with the High School sports, the mile race was run on Monday afternoon, when a large field started, the winner being Master Alex Bain, who broke the School record for the distance, cutting it out in 4.43 against 5.5, the previous record. On Monday the Dannevirke men for the 22nd Reinforcements left for camp. As usual the men were played from the Drill Hall to the Railway- station by the band, and the National Reserve. A large crowd assembled t-o bid them God speed, and a safe return.
Entries for the motor cycle races to be held in Dannevirke on Labour Day- (next Monday), have closed and exceeded all expectations. All the registered champion riders are taking part, and some interesting contests are sure to take place. Given a fine day one of the most interesting exhibitions of motor riding should be witnessed, and a large gathering assured. The day will be a close holiday. News has come that Rifleman L. Davey, son of one of Dannevirke’s old residents, Mr. Davey, of Millers road, has been wounded. Another son. Private W. Davey, is nowdoing his bit in France, as a sniper.
Another Dannevirke soldier, Rifleman John Stevenson, has died from wounds. The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Gilmore, of Dannevirke, who has the sympathy of all in her bereavement. • A large number of country residents intend visiting Hastings for the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Show.
