PRICE OF BUTTER.

CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON Wellington, Oct. 17. Robert Triggs (Assistant Publii Service Commissioner), having beer appointed licensing authority undei the Order-in-Council of Octobei 13th. adopted the Board of Trade’s scheme for fixing the price of buttei ; for local consumption and compensating local suppliers for the differ- | ence between the price of exported ' butter and the price so fixed, invit--1 ed to a conference with him yesterday the butter trade representatives who were appointed last week to discuss with *the Government or the Board of Trade matters arising out cf the operation of the scheme. The conference met to-day, Mr. I Triggs presided and th" representatives of the butter trade present were Messrs W. Fisher, Pacey, Marks. Powdrell, Morton and Agar, in addition to the secretary' to the Department of Agriculture (Mr. F. S. Pope). Mr. Cuddie (Director of Dairv Division), and Mr. F. H. Taylor (officer in charge of Imperial Meat Supply). The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, chairman of the Board of Trade was also present. A general discussion took place, and explanations were afforded wherever desired. The chairman afterwards submitted for the consideration of the conference a working arrangement for the carrying out of the Board of Trade’s scheme, also a statement as to the returns which would be required by the licensing authority for the purpose of giving effect to the Order-in-Council. The clauses of the working arrangement were considered seriatim and certain suggestions were made and alterations effected by the conference as required. The working arrangement is supplementary to the Order-in-Council, and was prepared by Mr. Triggs with the object of facilitating the operation of the scheme. The form of license to be adopted was also discussed and some slight alterations were suggested, which will be referred to the Solicitor-General for his consideration. Eventually the. working arrangement as amended was agreed to. members of the /■-.-'fc'-nnre leaving matters in Mr. Triggs’ hands and it will be issued to the various butter factories. The whole scheme will be in oneration in the course of a few days.

Mr. Triggs stated to-night in respect to butter which may be awaiti>'<r sb'pment and upon which license fees have not been paid by factories owing to the time being insufficient to enable this to be done, that a temporary permit will be given to "xnort providing exporters are willing to give a guarantee making themselves liable for the payment of the license fnes on such butter.
