A leading resident of Palmerston ; North, who has been on a visit to the Far North informed a Manawatu “Standard” reporter that at Kaimaumau experiments are being; made with distilling peat for kauri gum oil. Forests that have been destroyed are now below sea level. The remains of the kauris have been changed into peat, which, on distillation, yields 20 or 30 gallons of oil to the ton of peat. About 25 per cent of this oil resembles petrol and can be used to propel motor cars and launches. The residue contains about 28 different kinds of heavy oils. Some of these make exceptionally good varnish oils, nearly equal to the best linseed varnish oil, costing 12/- more per gallon. The stills, or retorts, used are very interesting in their working. The gases from the peat can be used to heat the retorts. One man can’ attend to eight retorts, and it is anticipated that when the works are in full swing, a very large amount of these oils will be produced. The swamps cover thousands of acres, and as the peat varies from 10 feet to 15 feet in depth, a very large amount is there for treatment.

NINETY-SIX MILES PER HOUR ON AN INDIAN MOTOR CYCLE. The Indian motor cycle again demonstrated its wonderful reliability and staying power by beating all its previous records, and records held by other makes. In Australia within the last few days, Mr. J. Booth on his standard T.T. Indian succeeded in breaking the half, one, five and ten-niile world’s road records, adding nineteen (19) miles per hour on to the best speed done by the opposition machine in the previous onemile record. The new times are as follows: — HALF-MILE—9SJ miles per hour. ONE MILE —37 3-ssec, 96 miles p.h. FIVE MILES —3 minutes 25 3-. 1 ? seconds TEN MILES—7 minutes 45 4-5 seconds The above records would be considered a marvellous performance on a smooth prepared track special for racing let alone on the rough roads and under most adverse conditions as Booth met with.
